Marriage Related Records
dated 1855-1942
and recorded 1921-1942
in Marriage Abstract Book 90

Since 1881, when Missouri established a Marriage Application and License process for county Recorders of Deeds, the St. Louis City Recorder has maintained Marriage Abstract Books. In these books, the Recorder's marriage license clerks transcribe information from each marriage license, including name and county residence of bride and groom, date of marriage ceremony, and name of person officiating at marriage ceremony.

The Recorder retains these Abstract Books, as well as preserving the original marriage applications and licenses. If necessary, and on occasion has happened, the Recorder can certify a copy of a marriage license entry in a Marriage Abstract Book in lieu of certified copy of the actual license.

Marriage Abstract Book 90 is different. It contains 88 marriage-related documents recorded between the years 1921 and 1942, some having 19th Century dates of origin. The collection includes:

  • 12 Divorce Settlements
    or Separation Agreements
  • 14 transcribed Marriage Certificates (document correction issued by person officiating at ceremony, document not presented in a timely manner, and document issued from other jurisdictions)
  • 62 Marriage Contracts

Marriage Abstract Book 90, unlike most books maintained by the St. Louis City Recorder and Registrar, had no index. The book was indexed in 2011 by Recorder and Registrar Archivists Marie Ceselski and Terry Garrett.
