St. Louis Colonial Marriage Contract recordings include a transcription of the original document in French or Spanish and most often, but not always, accompanied by a translation in English. Some translations are problematic, made long after French and Spanish had ceased to be the prevalent languages of St. Louis and by translators without a working knowledge of the colloquialisms and slangisms of Colonial St. Louis and influences by Native Americans.

Marriage Contracts recorded with Missouri Recorders of Deeds are public records available for on-site research at no fee or by copy purchase at fees set by Missouri statute.
